Portrait Session Tips
Be prepared that things will be a little bit more wild than expected with little ones. The great thing about my style of family photography is that I love to capture that beauty in the chaos. These fun moments are will be your favorite images, I promise. I will always make sure that I get some classic smiling at the camera images as well.
Bring snacks, drinks and favorite toys to help little ones have a break and feel rewarded.
Wear coordinating yet timeless/neutral clothing. Bring a neutral blanket, and props (ie: hats, floral bouquet for mom to hold, bow for girls etc.)
I have attached a style board for color coordinating and pattern arranging ideas as well as recommended vendors for florals. For children’s clothes I recommend Cotton On, Zara and Old Navy. For Mom, I recommend Lulus. Morning Lavender, Reformation, H&M, Show Me Your Mumu, Free People, and Nordstrom’s.
Expect breaks. I like to give kids a little break here and there. Photoshoots can be a lot for them so we always go at their pace.
Try to choose a location that your child will be happy in. Sometimes seeing a new place, like the ocean for the first time can be overwhelming. We want little ones to feel comfortable and able to have fun.
Having a grandparent or aunt/uncle come along can be helpful sometimes. It also gives you and your significant other a chance to have photos taken of just the two of you.
Having hair and makeup done can help us moms feel so amazing in photos and it helps take a little less stress off the day of your session. Below is a link to my favorite vendors including hair & makeup artists)
Be ok with getting a little bit of dirt on you while picking up your little ones or running through the low tide.
Have FUN!!!! These moments go by so fast. I want to deliver a gallery of your family in the most genuine and carefree moments. Moments that you will cherish forever.
Please be on time. I’m a natural light photographer, so the sun dictates how long I can photograph you. Please make proper considerations for traffic, hair delays, and fashion emergencies! ;) An average shoot lasts around 1.5 hours…if you show up 30 minutes late, the session is not extended, but, rather ends at the regularly scheduled time because of lighting. I just want to be honest in advance and let you know I want the BEST photography experience for you. And being on time achieves exactly this! Depending on final location choice, you can expect to start roughly two hours prior to sunset.
Plan nap schedules. Especially with newborns. Feed them an hour prior to your session. Change their diaper right before your session. We we swaddle them and let them get nice and sleepy.
